The Art of Gianluca Rolli!

I am happy to take this opportunity to showcase the works of Gianlucca Rolli, an exceptional illustrator and sculptor from Rome, Italy. Rolli is a concept artist at Forge Studios and I noticed his exceptional gallery at Artstation and knew instantly, that he would be a solid addition to the Brush Tool library. Without wasting anymore time, let’s go on with this article and look at his beautiful collection of works.

Age of Pantheons

gianluca-rolli-horus-illustrazione-5a

It is always refreshing to see artists creating their own rendition of Gods from across the world. Rolli does an exceptional job of creating a fresh take on these Gods but what he does even better is to depict scale in these storytelling frames. By comparing the height and might of the Gods with ‘mortal’ elements, he accomplishes the larger-than-life attributes of the Gods. In the Horus illustrations, he settles Horus behind a human boy and the pillars of the Egyptian chamber, thus accomplishing a neat comparison between the God and the environment around him.

gianluca-rolli-sarasvati-illustrazione-3a

The Saraswati illustration is even simpler with two attributes of the illustration contributing to the scale. One is the difference of the size between Saraswati and the little human meditating in the palm of her hand. Two, the fact that Saraswati is looking down upon him. The gaze itself creates a psychological obligation for the viewer to feel like the Goddess is actually looking down at them.

gianluca-rolli-raijin-fuijin-illustrazione-2b2

The Raijin-Fujin illustration is uber dynamic and the shard of lightning guides our eyes through the artwork. The woman with her baby obviously becomes our comparison of scale but it also the perspective and the fact that Raijin is shrouded in shadow, standing behind Fujin who is closer to the light source of the explosive aura.

gianluca-rolli-giove-illustrazione-5-cmyk

The Giove illustration reminds me of Mukesh Singh’s illustration from 18 days. The composition is more portrait than landscape and the colours are a lot more muted than that of Mukesh Singh but the energy is the same and works for an overly exciting story frame.

gianluca-rolli-tlaloc-illustrazione-4a

The Tlaloc illustration is expertly crafted with the structures of the environment all pointing towards the main focal point of the illustration, that being Tlaloc. The boy in the centre is acting as the scale comparison but Rolli also uses an interesting blend of focus and defocus to create the illusion of magnanimity.

gianluca-rolli-heimdall-illustrazione-2a-cmyk

The Heimdallr illustration is working in layers and seems to depict more in terms of depth than in terms of scale. This is the only illustration where intricate detail has been provided to the costume of the character, making it apparent that Rolli wanted to concentrate on the character himself, rather than the story around him.

AOT – Redesign Sculpts

Any Attack On Titans fan will love these sculpts! Rolli sculpts out the muscles with ease, depicting the nature of the Titans with each sinew, shape and pose. Anatomical visualization doesn’t get more dynamic than this!

Ottoman Series

I cannot help but fall in love with the armour design! And if that wasn’t good enough, have a look at the silhouette of these characters. There is a lot of power riding behind the conceptualization of these characters.

Illustrations

3D Designs

If the AoT sculpts weren’t enough to display Rolli’s prowess in creating 3d characters, here are a few more examples of the same. But in these examples, Rolli is heavily plays around with material to show some crazy character variations.

The Art of Pacific Rim – Uprising!

Qv8LRnj

The ideal movie to bring out the nine year old in you (Honest Trailers reference), with Giant Robots beating the pulp out of Giant Monsters in a trippy ultra-colourful world! Yes, Pacific Rim! Though the second instalment of  this epic franchise didn’t quite live to it’s hype, the art that went into making this movie can, in no means, be ignored. Creating a visual trend from basic to the finished pieces, the pain-staking process of creating Concept Art and Keyshot Designs is evident and presents itself so true to the basic nature of the narrative and it’s conceptual necessities. Here’s a look at the work of the artists who collaborated to make this movie become a reality –

Angelarium – The Art of Peter Mohrbacher

Angelarium Cover

What we are about to dwell into an artificial universe as expansive as the mythology it is referred from. Angelarium, essentially, is a 52 page art and narrative book created by artist Peter Mohrbacher. However, this series has now become much larger than that. Not only is it exhibited through the beautifully created surreal paintings of Mohrbacher, but also, the sheer volume of work Mohrbacher has done for this series, now makes it a story worthy of the Gods.

Taking Biblical and Jewish characters, Mohrbacher has now made a lore through paintings and descriptions for each of the characters. Each design is so varied and yet, so detailed in nature, that the angels are unmistakable in their characteristics. What is more interesting is that Mohrbacher has gone down the road of transmedia to expand the reach to his audiences, with what was once a book, now becoming a series of books, playing cards, art prints, posters and merchandises. So much so, Mohrbacher is even created a language of the angels, equipped with it’s own script. Without, any further delay, let’s dive into the world of the Angelarium.

Zodiac Angels

As was mentioned earlier, the art is stunning. We can pick multiple segments of each artwork that make it what it is – the composition, the structure of the figures, the color tones, the contrast and highlight relationship, the fluidity of the the elements. In all respects, each piece is distinct in it’s visuals and overwhelming in it’s effect. What is worth mentioning is that unlike zodiac illustrations from other artists, Mohrbacher does not bother making his, literal. The representation of the zodiacs is only provided through subtle hints which the viewer may or may not catch and the illustrations, as an entity, seems to be free of that judgement.

 The Watchers

In contrast to the illustrations of the Zodiac angels, which were meant to establish each of the entities, this series is not only an establishment but also a narrative. Following the same impeccable technique and feel, Mohrbacher seems to define the characters either through the action they are doing or the milieu in which they are set in. Many of the angels are captured mid-movement and in-process to fulfilling their respective functionalities. Mohrbacher’s world building skills are very evident through this series, placing each of the angels in specific environments and then designing the angels such that they suit the said environment.

Saraphim

The Seraphim are heavenly or celestial bodies whose origins trace back to Ancient Judaism. Mohrbacher has transformed these characters into the Angels of his Angelarium. Again, world building and character establishments have played a pivotal role in the creation of these pieces. Due significance should also be given to the research done by Mohrbacher to bring these stories to life in his own way.

Here are a few of Mohrbacher’s older works –

The use of digital sculpting tools has now become a dominant trend among concept artists, illustrators, modelling and texturing artists to create marvelous 2.5D and 3D characters, creatures and props with stunning detail and precision. The most commonly used digital sculpting software, ofcourse, is Pixologic’s Zbrush and is in the pipeline of Pre-visualization and 3D studios around the world. The large number of super-useful options and the ease of learning of the software makes Zbrush the success that it is. Pixologic’s dedication to its community and it’s forums add to the advantages of using Zbrush. If you are looking to learn Zbrush, here are a bunch of links that you will find useful –

The Visual Mastery of Apex Legends

apex-legends-logo-wallpaper-2560x1600-18464_7

The new kid in the block has taken over the neighborhood and how! Apex Legends is the new console and PC based Battle Royale created by Respawn Entertainment and published by EA Sports. And with it’s advent, the Battle Royale market has been taken by storm, with the previous rulers of the market falling remarkable short in front of this giant.

Set in the Titanfall universe (but with the Titans), Apex Legends is a game where 20 squads, each comprising of 3 members, fight tooth and nail to become the last team standing in a gradually shrinking sci-fi induced map.

For us, Apex Legends stands out for the amazing visuals they have managed to create, an even greater feat considering this is ping-based battle royale. We took the time to sift through the concept art and 3D outputs which eventually makes this game so beautiful. Through this article we also congratulate the team at Respawn Entertainment and everyone else who worked in making this game the visual treat that it is.
